Toasted Rooster Cafe

You know what time it is… it’s breakfast time! A quick scan of popular Sacramento breakfast places will yield you The Toasted Rooster Cafe. With such great reviews, I had to see for myself just what this place offers!

The Toasted Rooster Cafe is a diner located on Fulton Ave. It’s not the first restaurant that’s been in this location as the building a bit on the older side. The Toasted Rooster has some nice modern upgrades to its interior aesthetic, but it retains a very homey feel. I found the restaurant to be clean and welcoming with a style and charm all its own.

A sign on the door states that the food here isn’t fast food, but made fresh with every order. Hmm, interesting. Does it mean that the food will take longer to get from order to table? Let’s find out.

According to some reviews that I’ve read, the sign actually does mean that, and some folks have waited a while for their meals to finally get to them. It’s my understanding that these same folks came to the restaurant during busy hours so the kitchen must have been slammed with orders. The restaurant is a good size, so I can imagine that if it is packed the kitchen could get behind. Fortunately for me, I didn’t come during a big rush and was able to get my food extremely quickly.

The waitress who served me was very attentive to my needs and was quick to take my order. I watched her with other customers and found that she was totally friendly with them as well. She’s the kind of waitress that raises the bar when it comes to service. I really enjoyed her work ethic and was sure to leave a very nice tip for her because of this.

I was pretty hungry on my visit so I went for the churro waffles. The photos online looked amazing and it was very good. In fact, the waffle was excellent. It had just the right chew and texture. The waffle was topped with churros and whipped cream. The whole combination would satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth.

On the side I chose to go with the breakfast standards - sausage, bacon, and eggs. I had the eggs over medium and they were just that. I appreciated the level in the egg preparation because getting over medium isn’t the easiest to achieve. Though I loved the eggs, I was a bit let down by the sausage and bacon. I felt they were serviceable, but they didn’t blow me away and I found myself veering away from them during my meal. That’s really odd because I typically will scarf those particular sides down extremely quickly.

I also made an extra order of hash browns because I just love hash browns and had to see how theirs came. The Toasted Rooster offers my favorite style of hash browns where the potatoes are all slivered up. Again, I thought the hash browns were ok, but I wasn’t blown away by them. I’m just not sure what held them back - it really was just the feeling I had as I sat there and had my breakfast.

For my drink I had their cold brew, and it was a monster! It came in this huge container. I had to use a ton of creamer to get the coffee the way I wanted it. Thankfully my server was awesome and got me exactly what I needed.

Overall, I can see why people love this breakfast diner. The Toasted Rooster Cafe serves up popular breakfast items and does them well. Though some of the items on my visit didn’t hit all the way for me, I can still confidently say that this will be a favorite of many. If you’re looking for a breakfast spot in Sacramento, you really ought to give The Toasted Rooster a try!
