The Morning Fork

The Morning Fork is a very popular breakfast/brunch location in Sacramento. On weekends, there are usually long lines and crowds waiting to get in. On weekdays, the wait is substantially less, and on this visit we were able to get seated right away.

The restaurant has an old diner feel to it on both the outside and in. There is a large sign that will help you find the restaurant when you’re driving down the street looking for it. The exterior is also painted yellow - to stand out from the rest. It’s pretty hard to miss. The interior of the restaurant has a large countertop area as well as booth seating. There’s nothing modern about any of it, but that’s just what adds to its charm.

You’ll find a host of things you can order when you peruse the menu. If you’re looking for a heartier meal, you can order their breakfast burger or chicken and waffles. I’m typically in this camp, but today I wanted to try a little bit of both so I ordered a sweet item with savory items on the side.

My sweet item was the chocolate banana waffle. And I was very impressed with it. It came with a deliciously made waffle topped with sliced bananas, chocolate curls, and butter. On the side was a cup of syrup. You’d think that this item would be sweet-overkill but it wasn’t at all. The flavor combination was perfect, and I just went in for more and more - even though I really prefer savory foods. The best part of it had to be the chocolate curls. They were perfectly smooth and melted slightly on the top of the hot waffle. The dish was extraordinarily enjoyable and something that I would easily recommend to anyone.

For sides I had 2 eggs, hash browns, and bacon. These savory sides are my usual go-to’s at breakfast places. Of these items, the eggs were the best of the bunch. I ordered them cooked over-medium. Over-medium eggs are usually done wrong when they come out to me as the cooks typically over-do it and they end up over-hard. I was delighted to see that the eggs here were just right. The yolk was just slightly runny with other parts of it being cooked a bit more. They were perfection.

The hash browns and bacon did leave me a bit wanting even though they were also very good - just not the way I typically like them done. Starting with the bacon - it’s a thicker cut - so even when they are cooked well with blackened marks on them, it still has a chew rather than a crisp break when you eat it. If you like thicker bacon with more chew, then these would be great. It just wasn’t my thing. And as for the hash browns, they were crispier than I typically like. For a shredded hash brown, I love the top layer very crispy with the under layer being softer. It’s all a bunch of nit picking, but that’s just the way I like ‘em!

To get everything washed down I ordered a cream soda. I’m a big fan of cream sodas as not many places have them. It came with the cream mixed in and flavored with raspberry. Kudos to The Morning Fork for having such a delightful drink on the menu!

If you’re in the mood to check out a breakfast or brunch restaurant in Sacramento, The Morning Fork is one of the places you’ve got to check off the bucket list.
