Sarom’s Southern Kitchen
I’ve heard of Sarom’s Southern Kitchen for a while now, but I’ve never been able to go as it is only open for breakfast and lunch. And that’s a shame because I know people would absolutely flock here for dinner! As the name suggests, Sarom’s Southern Kitchen specializes in Southern food. They have everything from delicious fried chicken to comforting gumbo.
I’ve been seeing social media photos of the chicken and waffles and so that’s the item that I just had to order on my visit. I came in at about 1pm on a weekend and business was brisk, but I was able to get a table right away.
I found the servers to be friendly and efficient, and I was able to put my order in within minutes. I got my drink and just had a short wait before my food came.
Looking around, Sarom’s isn’t fancy or modern at all. The restaurant is older and the age definitely shows a bit. It really reminds me of an old diner on the side of the road that you’d find during a roadtrip out of town. None of these, of course, are bad things! I actually love the feel of the restaurant. It’s been loved and frequented a lot - it’s a place that people want to come to again and again.
Along with the chicken and waffles I ordered some cheesy grits and a corn muffin. The cheesy grits came piping hot and they were heavenly. The grits and cheese were a match made in heaven and gave me the warm comfort food I was wanting that day. The muffin had bits of corn strewn throughout and was baked to a perfect golden color. It tasted just as good as it looked… and it look reeeaaal good!
Though I adored the sides, the main star of the meal was the chicken and waffles dish. The waffles came thin and stacked with a big round dollop of butter on the top. I poured some syrup right over the top and began working my way through it. I found the waffles to be very easy to eat, and I appreciated the thin nature of the waffles, they didn’t fill you up too much as to not have any room for the chicken!
Speaking of the chicken. It was fried to absolute perfection with a perfectly crisp batter that is perfect for any kind of hot sauce to go over the top. The wings were very large and provided a substantial meal that left me feeling pretty full. In fact, I had to take the rest home because my eyes were larger than my stomach.
I’ll definitely have to come back to give the rest of the menu a try. The rib lunch, jambalaya, and mac n’ cheese are all calling my name!
I wouldn’t hesitate to come to Sarom’s Southern Kitchen whenever possible! It’s certainly a Sacramento gem!
