My Burma

My Burma is a restaurant located at the Davis Commons. It serves up Burmese cuisine to its patrons. The food here is made with care and offers diners dishes that are not common to the area. My Burma is a unique gem of a restaurant and one that I enjoy frequenting whether it be dining in or taking food to go.

To me, Burmese food has similarities with India, Chinese, Thai, and other Asian cooking styles. You’ll find plenty of dishes that have curry, coconut, and Asian spices within them.

To start your meal, there are a number of appetizers to select from. The samusas are fried pockets of potatoes and garlic. They are fun to eat, but can be quite filling. The platha is a multi-layered bread that you can order with different side dips. Also on the app menu are lettuce wraps, fried tofu, and my kid’s favorite honey fried chicken.

If you’re looking for a lighter meal, My Burma has a number of salad options, but the most popular salad according to our waitress is the tea leaf salad. This salad consists of fermented tea leaf, lettuce, peanut, fried garlic, tomato, sunflower seeds, fried yellow chickpea jalapenos, sesame seeds, and lemon. That’s quite a number of flavors melded together!

For mains, my personal favorites are the mint chicken and the eggplant with garlic sauce. The mint chicken has a surprising amount of heat to it. It’s actually less mint and more jalapeno. The heat in this dish slowly climbs as you eat more and more of it. The flavor is great and it’s something I order from Burma Eat quite often. As with most Asian dishes, make sure you order rice to go with this main - I would not recommend just eating the chicken on its own.

Few places do eggplant the right way, and I’m happy to say that Burma Eat gets it done correctly. The eggplant has a beautiful purple color to it. The skin is just the right texture and cooked so that it isn’t too slimy and soft. I’m always impressed with restaurants that can do eggplant justice - and Burma Eat is one of them!

If you have room for desert, Burma Eat offers a nice selection of deserts to choose from, but I think my go-to order will always be the fried banana. This classic Asian desert pairs a golden fried banana with ice cream. It’s a classic for a reason.

Pricing at Burma Eat is on the higher end, so if you’re feeding an entire family, your bill may be higher than you think. Most main dishes are just under $20 each with salads being around the $15 mark.

As with many of the high quality restaurants in Davis, be prepared for a wait if you come during dinner hours on a weekend. It’s worth it though for the delicious food that is served here!
