Marie’s Donuts (Watt Ave.)
So I’ve been looking for the best donuts in Sacramento and I came across the name Marie’s Donuts. Apparently, these donuts are very highly rated so I just had to go and give them a try. Well… it turns out there are TWO Marie’s Donuts in Sacramento and they aren’t related to each other. I wasn’t sure which Marie’s Donuts as the ‘good one’ so I decided to go to both! The first Marie’s Donuts I chose to visit was the one on Watt Ave.
This Marie’s Donuts is located in an old strip mall style location with its own little parking lot. This location has been around since the 70’s and has been a local favorite for years and years. When you enter, you’ll see a large countertop along with an area to eat in. The donuts are located behind the register rather than in a donut case, so they are a bit harder to inspect up close.
The person worker in the front was very friendly and helped me with all my questions. As someone who eats donuts on the regular, you wouldn’t think I had too many questions, but this Marie’s Donuts location had some pretty unique items, and I wanted to get the info on them.
First of all, their old fashioned selection was more than I had ever seen in terms of variety. Usually with old fashioned donuts you’d find glazed, chocolate, maple, and plain. Well, in addition to those they had half and half vanilla/chocolate and chocolate/lemon. Apparently they have a full lemon version as well, but not at the time I was there. The chocolate/lemon especially intrigued me because I’d never seen a yellow and chocolate donut like that before.
Another style of donut that really caught my eye were the cream filled donuts. The worker told me that the cream was non-dairy and popular with customers. I could tell by looking that these donuts would be a hit - they were engorged with an enormous amount of cream inside! These came topped with chocolate or powdered sugar or with maple.
In terms of taste, the donuts were excellent. In my opinion, donuts that try to do too much often miss the mark and end up being overly complicated. I love a donut that is simple, delicious, and easy to eat. All the donuts at this Marie’s Donuts hit that mark.
My only question in regards to Marie’s here was the fact that there were no French Crullers in sight. I didn’t get a chance to ask, so maybe they had just sold out of them, but that style of donut was surprisingly missing from the selection.
