Mamma Eatery
Mamma Eatery is a restaurant in the college city of Davis, Ca. It took over Bistro 33’s location and brings a classy experience to its diners. Italian food is Mamma’s specialty, and you can either enjoy it inside their beautiful restaurant dining room or outside on their large patio. If you’re in the mood for a drink, Mama Eatery features a large bar area for those needing a place to unwind after a long days work. There’s a bit for everyone at Mamma’s!
I came to Mamma Eatery on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for lunch. As a party of six with two rambunctious kids, we thought the outdoor patio would be a good place to be since the kids would have a bit more room to stretch their legs. Unfortunately, we were told that the max table capacity was 4 so we were seated inside. Though it wasn’t our first choice, the indoor table had plenty of space and was very comfortable. I really loved the woody tones our the eating area - it was very inviting.
We were given some complimentary bread with olive oil and balsamic to enjoy as we were seated. The bread was warm and delicious. The entire table enjoyed it, and it made for a great opening little dish for us. To add to that, we also chose the Fritto Misto and the Arancini Tartufo as additional appetizers. The Fritto Misto is a crispy calamari dish that comes with shrimp, onion, asparagus, fresh lemon, and garlic aioli. The Arancini Tartufo are deep fried risotto balls with mozzarella cheese and homemade tomato sauce. Both additional appetizers were great and dishes that I’d be happy to order again.
The kids were able to select from a small kids menu. They both chose the cheese pizza and it turned out be be stellar. The pizza had a delightfully thin crust to it with delicious melty cheese. All the adults wanted to piece of the kids’ pizzas! The kids meal also came with a drink as well as some ice-cream for dessert. For about thirteen bucks, it was a great deal.
The main I chose was the Fusilli Boscaiola. It has tomato, cream, pancetta, mushroom, chili pepper, and shaved grana. I was attracted to this dish because the menu indicated it had a little heat to it. Overall I really enjoyed the flavor of the dish. It came with a generous portion and it was piping hot when served. My only small gripe about the dish was that the sauce felt a bit too runny for me. I was wanting something with a thicker cream sauce.
Speaking of portions, one of my friends ordered a caesar salad with chicken. Oh boy, this portion was BIG! The salad came in a very large bowl and topped with a generous amount of chicken. I was genuinely shocked at how much they gave you in the salad. Suffice it to say, they didn’t finish it and had to take it home.
So if you’re longing for a place that doesn’t skimp when it comes to portions, Mamma eatery shoudl have your back!
The overall experience at Mamma Eatery was a very positive one. The one thing I thought that could have been better on my visit was the wait time for the food. We noticed that another table of six that arrived 15 minutes after us had all gotten their meal before we had ours. I’m sure there could be reasons for their speed, but the food did take a while to get out of the kitchen and to us. Sure, it gave us plenty of time to chat and enjoy each others company, but the service should be faster than what we had.
In all, Mamma Eatery left me with more good feelings than bad ones. It features great dining areas and portions that will satisfy.
