The Flame Cafe
The Flame Cafe is a Hong Kong style diner/cafe restaurant located in the 99 Ranch Market shopping plaza on Florin Road. This restaurant is literally in front of 99 Ranch Market and next to a Greek restaurant there. I had trouble finding it at first because The Flame Cafe and the Greek restaurant look like they are one and the same so The Flame Cafe gets lost a little. But that hasn’t stopped The Flame Cafe from becoming a popular restaurant to eat at. On my visit during lunch on Saturday, the place was packed with people having to wait for tables.
It’s always great seeing a packed restaurant because it tells you that it’s probably a pretty good place to eat! And that certainly turned out to be true of The Flame Cafe.
The Flame Cafe’s menu is quite large and extensive. There are noodle soups, dry noodles, a huge variety of drinks, as well as rice plates, baked dishes, and brick toast. If you like Hong Kong style restaurants like I do, then you’ll want to have just about everything on the menu! Sadly, our stomachs aren’t that big so we had to limit ourselves this time and come back again to try more things!
The first ‘must-have’ item had to be the drinks that come with an ice dog or bear. These cute ice creations sit on top of the drink amongst the ice cubes and is a very picture worthy sight. Though the drinks were great already, these feature really elevated it to another level. I can’t believe how cute they made these little ice sculptures! My bear came on top of a traditional Hong Kong milk tea whereas my friend’s dog came with the red bean drink.
As it was still a little early, we both went for a brick toast style item. I had the popular Hong Kong style French toast. This crisply on the outside and fluffy on the inside item was heavenly. The delicious eggy exterior added a really amazing flavor in combination with the bread underneath - and the syrup put it over the top. We also tried the peanut butter and condensed milk bread, which was also spectacular. I mean, anything with condensed milk has to be spectacular!
To round out the meal I got us an order of beef chow fun for a nice savory finish to the meal. And I’ve got to say that the chow fun was on point. It was honestly one of the best chow funs I’ve had in Sacramento. It came out perfectly hot and without the noodles clumped together. We added a little bit of their hot sauce and the dish was just what we wanted to close out the meal.
The food was extremely satisfying. I’m really looking forward to a return trip so that I can give the baked rice and spaghetti dishes a try. The dishes with a pork chop on the top is a Hong Kong style classic. One other dish that I’m dying to have is the dish where the beef finishes cooking at the table. I saw another patron order the dish and it looked and smelled incredible.
Overall The Flame Cafe is a perfect choice for some Hong Kong cafe food. I can’t really even think of one better at the moment in Sacramento! There aren’t too many places where I’m ready to go right back for more of the menu, but this is one such place! It really did impress!
