LowBrau

LowBrau is a popular bar and restaurant in midtown Sacramento. It’s a unique place in that there is a generous amount of space in the dining room. This space houses some long tables for folks to hang out, talk, and enjoy each others’ company. LowBrau features sausages on the menu that you can top with your favorite toppings as well as burgers, sandwiches, and salads. It’s not a huge menu, but the food items all are pretty much exactly what you’d want with a nice glass of suds.

Speaking of suds, there are plenty of beers on tap at LowBrau. Check out their drink menu and you’ll find everything from beers, to wines, to cocktails. But as a lightweight in those categories, I went with a soda. I initially asked for a Coke, but they actually craft their own soda at their bar. This fresh and fizzy drink had a sweet and unique character all its own. It was a pretty cool discovery for me as rarely do places go without the mainstays of Coke and Pepsi products!

On my visit to LowBrau I knew I was going to order one of their sausages as that is what they are known for. On the menu, you have the choice of bratwust, polish, spicy andouille, or frankfurter. Select one and then add your choice of two toppings. I went with the sauerkraut and bier cheese, but they also have pickled jalapenos, caramelized onions, relish, and hot peppers as options. You can, of course, have more than 2 toppings, but there is a small charge for the extras. The toppings and the sausage are served on a pretzel roll and comes with a pickle on the side.

The sausage was very tasty and full of flavor. I absolutely loved it and happily ate the entire thing up. The pretzel bun has more substance than your standard white bread bun, so it gave the meal some heft. If you’d like, you can add duck fat fries or a side salad to the sausage for four bucks. I went with the duck fat fries and some cheese to dip it in and I was in heaven. The fries were very tasty and thick cut. They came out piping hot and dipping it in the cheese just really elevated the whole thing. I certainly wouldn’t neglect adding them to the meal as they are a perfect accompaniment. But if you’re looking for something lighter, I’m sure the salad would be just fine.

Just for kicks I decided to try the big bavarian pretzel alongside my meal. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to finish it by myself on this visit, but at least I could bring it home for later! The pretzel was just as big as I thought it would be and it was coated with thick grains of salt. The pretzel comes with your choice of two dips. It was great and something that I’d love to share with some friends if we come back to hang - which we definitely will in the near future!

Surprisingly, LowBrau also has a vegan part of the menu to cater to folks who adhere by that diet. They have vegan sausages, sides, and sandwiches available. Though I’m not a vegan, I know people who are and they would really appreciate the options here.

For fans of brunch you’re in luck as LowBrau is open for brunch on the weekend. They have breakfast sandwiches, burritos, chicken & waffles, as well as eggs benedict. This would be something you can enjoy after a visit to the Sacramento Farmers Market that usually sets up shop on Saturday mornings in front of LowBrau.

LowBrau is a great place to hang out and get a nice meal in Sacramento. Come and check it out for yourself when you get the chance!
