Koshi Ramen Bar

Koshi Ramen Bar is a restaurant located in Natomas next to the Regal Theater. It’s at a prime location that is perfect to visit before or after watching a movie. You’ll find a number of ramen options here as well as a large number of appetizers and rice bowls.

Let’s talk about the ramen first. I’d have to say that the ramen here is pretty average. On the numerous times I’ve been here, I found the ramen to come out a little cooler than I would have liked and also with less flavor as well. The ramen has a flat flavor profile that had me really searching for the taste. This is really too bad as Koshi does provide a number of additions to the ramen to jazz it up a bit if you like. It’s just that the base noodle and broth was a bit lacking no matter what extra ingredients were put in.

Extra toppings that you can purchase include extra soup or noodles, more pork, chicken, shrimp, scallops, kale noodles, corn, kikurage mushrooms, and more. I really think you can load up your bowl if you really wanted to… but it’d be costly and wouldn’t really change the flavor profile of the ramen.

Though I found the ramen to be a bit lacking, the starters/appetizers impressed me. The size of the appetizers was great. They were certainly enough to share, and if you just wanted to have it for yourself, you’d get filled up pretty quickly.

I am a huge fan of chicken karaage. This appetizer is Japan’s version of a chicken nugget. They are fried bits of chicken that you dip in sauce. I have found that different restaurants make their karaage in different ways. The karaage at Koshi is certainly a bit different than other places karaage, but they are still good and the portion size is large. I was actually very surprised at how much chicken I got with my order.

The cream cheese crab rangoons were another appetizer that came a bit different than I was used to, but still enjoyed. They were triangular in shape and had a crispy exterior that was filled with a pocket of cream cheese and imitation crab meat.

Tempura, grilled whole squid, oysters, octopus, lumpia, and gyoza are all on the menu as well as other items. It’s a vast array of food and choices that you can’t find elsewhere all together like this.

If you’re wanting a rice bowl, customers have the choice of unagi (grilled Japanese eel), chashu (roasted pork belly), or grilled chicken. I’ve tried the unagi and chashu bowls and enjoyed them. I’d probably go for a rice bowl over a ramen bowl if I were looking for the best value and taste option here.

So Koshi Ramen Bar is supposed to be all about the ramen. I’ve found it to be all about the other foods other than ramen! Go figure!
