Hikari Sushi and Omakase

Hikari Sushi & Omakase is a rare find in the city of Davis. This special little restaurant offers a traditional menu on Tuesday through Thursday, but has features omakase on the weekends (Friday and Saturday). Omakase is a special way of dining in which the menu choices are up to the chef. So that’s right! You don’t order anything, rather, the chef prepares a meal for you. And usually this meal is very special and features the best of what the restaurant has to offer.

I went for omakase on my visit to Hikari. And if that’s something you’d like to do as well, know that you will have to make a reservation for the experience as you cannot just walk in for it. The omakase is also quite pricey as after gratuity and tax, it was a little over $160 per person at the time of my visit.

On the day of the meal, you arrive and are welcomed into the restaurant. There is some limited counter space in front of the sushi chefs as well as a two booths. The booths are a bit more comfortable and have more space for the food, but the counter is great for a really close look at what the chefs are doing. I don’t think you can go wrong with either option.

Chef welcomes you and explains how the meal will go and the meal begins. Patrons get to see up close exactly how the chef prepares the food for you. You are free to ask any questions you like and converse with the chef as they prepare. It’s quite and intimate experience and something that is unlike anything else you typically get at a restaurant.

During my meal, I was presented with extraordinarily high quality ingredients. For example, the wasabi used was hand shaved from a fresh wasabi root. The root itself cost more than many of the fish that was available to eat. This fresh wasabi root had the distinct taste of wasabi, but without the harsh kick you often get with it. In my experience, the highest quality foods have a smoothness to them, and this certainly had that.

All the fish cuts were made in front of us with the highlight of the night being the tuna. Chef described three cuts that we would enjoy. The final piece came from the belly of the tuna (otoro) and was the most succulent thing I’ve ever had. If you’re a sushi lover, this is one of the experience that you really must have!

The wait staff was great and attentive to each and every need. Omakase is a fine dining experience and the atmosphere and service was in line with that.

Hikari Sushi is a special place, and there really isn’t anything like it in Davis, so if you want a real sushi treat, make sure you pay Hikari a visit.
