Happy Mochi

Happy Mochi is an Asian snack restaurant that serves up three main items - boba drinks, mochi donuts, and Korean style corn dogs. Happy Mochi is located in downtown Davis, but a little further out than where most of the main downtown restaurants are. Though it’s location is a bit away from where most of the other restaurants are located, you can’t miss it with its bright pink color scheme.

Places like Happy Mochi have become popular in recent years, so they don’t feel as special as they once did. This also means that new places have to change and step up their game in order to set themselves apart from the others. Happy Mochi doesn’t really do that, but they do offer pretty much exactly what you’d expect a place like this to have.

Walking in you’ll find the mochi donuts of the day next to the cashier. You can tell they are fresh and baked that day as they sit for you to see on their baking trays. When I visited there were five different types of mochi donut flavors. They had mochi donuts topped with Fruity Pebbles cereal, a strawberry drizzled one, churro, cookie, and sprinkles. You can get the donuts individually or in different variety packs. If you go for a pack, the donuts will come in a beautiful box for you to take them home in.

The mochi donuts are quite a bit pricier than their American donut counterparts. A box of three mochi donuts is about ten dollars. For that much money you could get a dozen at the local donut store. Mochi donuts are quite a bit more dense and make a nicer social media photo than standard donuts, but I’d go for a plain glazed donut over one of these any day. If you’re into mochi donuts, this place will satisfy that craving. My family certainly loved them as the box I bought was gone that same night!

Boba has been a popular Asian treat for years and years now, so having boba available isn’t anything new, but having unique and high quality boba is a must to stay relevant in this market. Happy Mochi has a number of special boba’s on their menu that are customizable and adjustable. The boba drink comes in a very cute cup with a lid that matches the shape of a mochi donut. Though there are many flavors and creations to choose from, I found the actual taste of the drink to be pretty average. The drink didn’t have any qualities that would make it stand out from other boba drinks in town.

The final main item on the menu are the Korean style corn dogs. Just like the mochi donuts, these corndogs have been becoming more and more popular as of late. I found the corndogs here at Happy Mochi to be quite large and crunchy. The corndog is hefty in size and will definitely fill you up more than some found at other establishments. The corndogs can come filled with cheese, sausage, or a combination of both. They can also be topped on the outside with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, blue Takis, or potatoes.

Happy Mochi is a fun place to check out, but the items you can find here are very average. I’d also say that the prices of items here are also a little more expensive than other restaurants that serve the same thing. Happy Mochi is a fine place to check out, but they’ll need to step up their game a bit if they want to be the best in town.
