Bruxie

I have to admit that I was extremely excited to give Bruxie a try. Chicken and waffles are a classic combination, and a restaurant that specializes in waffle dishes seemed too good to be true.

Buxie is located in Davis and is a a restaurant that has made its what north from Southern California. As of this review, this is the only Bruxie in all of NorCal! So it looks like UC Davis Bruxie fans are in luck if they’re a fan of this franchise!

As the restaurant was moving in, there was quite a bit of anticipation for this establishment. Davis doesn’t really have a place that serves chicken and waffles, and Bruxie came to town with a great reputation and a delicious looking menu.

Sadly, I didn’t find Bruxie to meet the expectations that I had for it. I came with a friend for lunch on a Sunday and gave a few items a try. I ordered the hot chicken on a waffle as well as an order of their angry mac n’ cheese. My friend ordered their original chicken sandwich with a side of fries.

While the food looked delicious and made for great photos, we found actually eating the food was problematic. The chicken portions were of a good size, but too big for the waffle it came in. Rather than it being a waffle sandwich, we had to figure out a way to cut the food up and make it edible together. It all ended up being a pretty messy eating experience. The nice thing about most traditional sandwiches is the fact that it’s easy to eat, and all the components come together into a delicious bite. That just wasn’t the case here.

In addition to the difficulty actually eating the food, the chicken and the waffle were both a bit below expectations. The chicken, while generously portioned, was a bit too dry. Combining that with a dry and crispy waffle didn’t make it much better. The whole thing needed a lot of sauce to balance things out. If the waffle had been a soft and fluffy one, things could have been different, but the waffles here are like hard frisbees.

On the side, the angry mac n’ cheese was solid as was their waffle fries. In fact, the best item we had off the menu turned out to be the fries that day as they were delicious - but we didn’t come here for the fries!

So in conclusion, I’m saddened to report that Bruxie is more looks than taste. I’d probably not make a return to try it again. With my initial experience and the cost of each item - which is something I haven’t even mentioned yet (Yes, it’s pricey) - it looks like I’ll still be missing chicken and waffles in Davis.
