Wayback Burgers

I absolutely LOVE and ADORE burgers, so when I found out that a new burger place was setting up shop at the Marketplace in Davis I was very excited. Wayback Burgers has now been open for a few months and I finally had the opportunity to give it a try. Does it live up to expectations? Let’s see!

Long story short… NO. Wayback Burgers did not come close to my expectations of a good burger. The main issue with the burger is that there is absolutely no taste to it. The texture, the look, the combinations of ingredients… it’s all there, but the burger somehow comes off as tasteless. It was a strange experience and one that made me stop eating my burger midway through the meal and just call it a day. Friends of mine who have tried Wayback before me mentioned that the food was lacking, but I didn’t think it was so severe!

I arrived on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and saw their very tempting menu. There was a good selection of burgers, chicken burgers, sides, and milkshakes. The interior of the restaurant is clean and goes long towards the back, which is nice as there is a good amount of seating.

I ended up ordering a cajun burger because I love the spicy flavors that cajun burgers usually have. The standard comes with two patties and you can combo it with fries and a drink. I went ahead and got the burger with a small drink and bacon cheese fries.

It didn’t take too long for the food to come out. Everything was presented well in its round serving tin tray. I went in for the fries first and noticed that there was a lack of flavor. Perhaps they were just a bit under seasoned. I went for some of the bacon and it turned out to also lack a bit of flavor. And that’s a weird thing to say about bacon!

I set aside the fries and took a big bite out of my burger and discovered that the same lack of taste was there too. The only thing that tasted as it should have was the cherry Coke I got from the fountain.

I had ideas initially to get a milkshake, but the food really turned me off to ordering more from them.

Wayback Burgers was a big letdown. Though the restaurant is well kept, the menu looks great, and the service was speedy, it was ultimately undone by the most important factor of them all: how the food actually tastes.
