Tasty Dumpling

Soup dumplings, also called xiaolongbao for people in the know, have scalding hot soup wrapped with meat inside a soft and thin dough. These little delights have been all the rage for the past few years, but only now is it catching on here in Sacramento. Restaurants like Tasty Dumpling offer legitimately authentic versions of xiaolongbao as well as other hot and cold noodle offerings.

The key to a good xiaolongbao is in the thin wrapper as well as the hot soup inside. A thin wrapper is a mark of high quality. The dumpling must be delicate and easily eaten. You don’t want to spend your time trying to chew through something thick. It’s also important that the soup is very hot - that means it’s fresh and prepared right then and there. The fine folks over at Tasty Dumpling do xialongbaos correctly in both regards.

If you’re a fan of pot stickers, Tasty Dumpling also has those on the menu. Pot stickers have a similar look to soup dumplings except they are pan fried to a crispy consistency. Dip them into some sauce and go to town on them. I would totally recommend these as a side item to go with your meal. They make awesome appetizers.

In the mood for soup outside a dumpling? They have that too! The popular beef noodle soup here is excellent. In this item you get traditional noodles with soft beef chunks. It’s something I’d love to have on a cold winter day.

Maybe the most unique item on the menu are the juicy pan fried pork buns. I personally had never seen these before coming to this location. These are a hybrid of xiaolongbao and pot stickers. One part is crispy and the other part is soft - and the thing is filled with pork and soup. It’s a beautiful dish and it’s just as tasty as it looks.

Tasty Dumpling is a restaurant in which you order at the front and then find your seat. It’s a relatively small restaurant and can get quite busy so make your plans to visit accordingly.
