Kathmandu Kitchen

Kathmandu Kitchen is a Nepali and Indian cuisine restaurant located in Davis, Ca. It’s flat grey front is very plain and wouldn’t really give off its vibe - but this restaurant is one that I have found to be authentic and quite generous in terms of portions.

Kathmandu Kitchen is located on G Street next to the new Woodstock’s Pizza location. Since the COVID years, G Street has been closed to traffic. I personally think this has worked for some restaurants and not so much for others. For places like Woodstocks, the street has been open for dining outdoors which works great with pizza. For the elegant Nepali/Indian food that Kathmandu serves up… not so much.

I came with a large party for lunch and the food took a while to prepare, but that was understandable. Each dish was made on order and came out piping hot. Most dishes came in two parts - usually a metallic bowl with an entree and then a separate container for rice. Meals that came with naan bread came in a large sectioned off plate.

As a fan of chicken tikka masala, I just had to order it on my visit. I found the chicken to be excellent. The chicken came in large chunks of white meat in the masala sauce. Typically I have found chicken tikka masala to be a very savoury dish, but the tikka here had a distinctive sweetness to it that I didn’t prefer. This was just personal preference though as the actual dish was cooked exactly as it should have been. I’m sure there are those out there that would prefer the sweetness of this variation of the dish.

What I did really enjoy were the vegetable samosas that I had as an appetizer. The samosas were extremely large and filled with delicious curried potatoes and veggies. Theses samosas were some of the biggest I’ve ever gotten. I’d say two of these would be the equivalent of four at another place. These samosas had the savoury outside I’d been craving that day with a perfect curry inside.

Being a Nepali/Indian restaurant, there are plenty of options for both vegetarians and those who want to have some meat. The vegetarian friends that were with me on my visit adored their meals. One of them, who really enjoys highly spicy food, commented that the food was spicy but not to the point of losing the flavor of the food.

Overall Kathmandu Kitchen is a great option for Nepali/Indian food in Davis. The food has an authentic quality that is refreshing. Kathmandu Kitchen’s prices are in the mid/high range, so if you’re a college student looking for a cheap meal you may want to look elsewhere.
