Jeon Ju Gom Tang & BBQ

Authentic Korean dishes with all the sides you could ever want… if you can find it! Jeon Ju Gom Tang & BBQ is hidden away from the more frequented areas of Sacramento. And even when you get to the parking lot you might not find it! The building Jeon Ju Gom Tang is in is seriously confusing. And side note: this place is not in a very nice area of town, so you might want to look twice as you make your way inside! Not even kidding!

So is all this searching worth it? I’d say yes! As strange and dilapidated as the outside of the restaurant it, the inside is surprisingly clean and well kept. The dining area is welcoming and warm with friendly servers that bring you to an open table quickly.

Jeon Ju Gom Tang & BBQ is a traditional Korean restaurant with a huge variety of dishes to select from. Their menu is quite large and features Korean stews, casseroles, grilled items, and BBQ. Entrees are not very budget friendly, but are on par with many traditional Korean restaurants that I’ve been to. Popular dishes like bulgogi is around $23 with casseroles reaching over $40 in some instances. Thankfully, there are specials on the menu that still offer up a well portioned amount of food for under $20. So if you’re really trying to budget, I certainly wouldn’t recommend a visit.

If you do decide to come and give Jeon Ju Gom Tang & BBQ a try, you’ll find the overall quality of food to be very high. The flavors in the meats and soup were delicious without being overpowering. The dishes always had a balance of flavor that was not heavy handed. This is the mark of a chef that wants to provide good food, not just a flash in the pan. In fact, none of the food is flashy, it’s just solid Korean food that anyone would enjoy eating for a solid meal.

As with most traditional Korean restaurants, the meal will come with a selection of small appetizers. We were given an impressive amount of these appetizers that included kimchi, veggies, and other mixed pickled items. Each were delicious and acted as both a great opener and wonderful palate cleansers.

While the servers were friendly, my biggest qualm with Jeon Ju Gom Tang & BBQ was the wait time. After being seated, there was a noticeably long wait before a waitress came to take our order. The food also took a noticeably long time to get to us after the order was put in. All-in-all it took upwards of 45-minutes from when we sat down to get our food.

As a more mom & pop style feeling restaurant, this wait time didn’t surprise me, but it did feel a bit too long of a wait for our hungry party. A few items were also forgotten from our order and had to be asked for again. It wasn’t anything outrageous, but still a little slip in terms of the service.

I enjoyed my experience having dinner at Jeon Ju Gom Tang as the food really stole the show. It was a satisfying meal that left me full and happy. The authentic flavors were appreciated. If you enjoy Korean food, I certainly would tell you go give Jeon Ju Gom Tang & BBQ a try.
