Salt & Straw
Salt & Straw on R Street is one of the hottest new places to get the coldest stuff in town. Salt & Straw is a purveyor of very high quality and interesting ice cream. When I first saw their list of flavors, I was blown away by their offerings. They have flavors like strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper and Arbequina olive oil in their freezers. It’s no wonder that Salt & Straw is as popular as it is with the people of Sacramento! They are all curious as to how these flavors taste!
I can say in general that the flavors work - no matter how odd some of them may sound. The folks over at Salt & Straw have done a magnificent job making sure that all the flavors work well together. And if you’re wondering what something tastes like… well… it’s actually pretty much exactly as it sounds. The flavors described are the flavors that you get in your mouth. And the taste is natural and authentic - not artificial.
Of course, words are words. The great thing about Salt & Straw is that they encourage you to try as much as you like. You really could try the entire menu of flavors and I’m sure they’d be totally fine with it. Just ask for a flavor and they give you a sample spoon to try. I was actually surprised at the amount in the spoon. These folks don’t skimp!
When visiting the Salt & Straw location on R Street you can expect some of their classic flavors like honey lavender, freckled min chocolate chip, double fold vanilla, and sea salt with caramel ribbons, but they also have some great seasonal flavors as well.
For Halloween, black cat licorice & lavender was available as well as Don Bugito’s creepy crawly critters, and the great Candycopia. I ordered myself a Candycopia after trying it out as a sample, and I’ve gotta say that it was one of the best ice-creams I’ve ever had. It has all the classics like Reeses’ and Snickers, but they are house made rather than just from the candy bar.
Options for your ice-cream are in a bowl, in a waffle, or on a cone. I had to go for the waffle because upon entering the shop you can smell the freshly made waffle cones. It was just too enticing.
For those who really love the ice-cream, you can also take home pints that they sell. The ice-cream isn’t cheap, so be prepared to pay a premium for this stuff. It was about thirty bucks for three of us when we went.
The shop also isn’t the largest place in the world so it can get crowded quickly. You may have to wait in line outside before entering to get your tastes and selections in.
Overall Salt & Straw is a wonderful addition to the Sacramento food scene. Their creative flavors will definitely delight all the foodies in town.
