Philz Coffee

Philz Coffee has been popping up all around the Sacramento region for a few years now. My first experience with Philz was in the Bay Area years and years ago, but they have finally really hit our area with a number of locations. The two locations that I am most familiar with are the Davis location and the one on R Street. Philz is known for their crafted coffees that they make one cup at a time - right when you order it.

In fact, their ordering system is a little unique. When you head into the restaurant, you have to get in the a line if there is one and wait for a barista. They call you over and then attend to what you need. The barista is sort of your personal coffee maker and will craft your beverage to your exact specifications. This service adds a nice charm to the entire Philz experience that gives customers a feeling that each person is treated as someone important.

If you’re new to Philz, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a coffee to try as the menu is displayed prominently above the baristas. The coffees all have their own name, but Philz does a great job describing what each coffee is like. For example, their ‘Dancing Water’ is a lighter roast with the aroma of milk chocolate, grains, and cashews. The ‘Tantalizing Turkish’ is a darker roast with the aromas of cardamom, herbs, and tobacco.

My personal favorite coffee to get is the Iced Mint Mojito. This is what Philz is really known for. It’s a sweet and smooth iced coffee with real mint leaves used as a garnish. If you’re like me and like your coffee more on the sweeter side without any bitterness, this is the one to go for. It’s a total revelation!

On my radar to try are the Iced Gingersnap and the Iced Coffee Rose. Both of those seem like they would be right up my alley.

When it comes to hot coffee, I enjoy the Ambrosia Coffee of God. I first tried this one because the name was so awesome. This coffee is also on the sweeter side and has fresh berry and honey notes. Again, great for anyone who likes a lighter coffee.

I’m sure if you enjoy stronger and coffee that has bit more bite to it, it’ll be there for you as Philz caters to all coffee lovers.

I will say, though, that no matter what coffee I get, Philz coffee has more of a punch of caffeine in it than other places. Most coffees don’t affect me at all, but Philz does!

If you’re hungry, Philz has a pretty large selection of both sweet pastry items and savory items for their customers to order. As with most higher end coffee places, the selection is quite good and of high quality. I would certainly add someone to my drink order if I was headed here for breakfast in the morning!
